Praying Monk with Lightning Bolt Halo

The Praying Monk” is a rock formation on the side of the famous Camelback mountain that sits in between Phoenix and Scottsdale Arizona. From the first time I saw this I was always fascinated with it and thought It would make a great spiritual shot with lightning striking. This is a shot that I worked on for three years to get. This is the real deal. I can not tell you how many times I went to my spot on the top side of this mountain and got nothing. This night was one of my most scariest nights chasing lightning. This was the first shot that got a little blown out it was an extreme bolt of energy. Nothing like being on the top of a huge rock with a metal tripod trying to get a shot for three years. This storm circled the mountains and swung around the back side and came back around to me. This was a very exciting night of chasing lightning. After this, I took off and did the chase to north Scottsdale. Lightning At Horse World Black and White Color Image Print

Lightning At Horse World a black and white color fine art print combination processing. The original was shot on film. Lightning at Horse World, Sculpture by Snell Johnson. This is the real deal. This is NOT a composite image. When I first saw this sculpture I thought it would be incredible with lightning striking. For me it is like the lightning bolts hit and the Arabian horse reared, then the Quarter horse and Thoroughbred horse took off in different directions, making this all come alive. It took me years to get this shot. It was one of the most dangerous photo shoot I have done. After years of waiting for the storms to be in the right place at the right time…. one night it happened. I was shooting in North Scottsdale Arizona and I noticed the storm down here.

So I bee lined it for this location. It was back in the day before all this area way built up. None of the houses were here. The 101 was not even started yet. I was standing in the middle of Pima road it was late so no cars. Back then people stayed home when these storms hit because of all the flash flooding and dips in the roads. So here I am shooting in the middle of the road with a medal tripod. The lightning strikes were extremely close. This was shot with a 50mm lens. About a 45 sec exposure. Water was running at my feet getting me wet. In the middle of the road with water at my feet and a medal tripod and lightning hitting feet away. But this is the Shot… this is the shot I have been waiting for for years. And it is happening. So I grin and bear it and hope of for the best. I can say my heart was racing. Did not even know if I would get the shot or get killed. Well I got the shot. One on color and one in Black and white. This is my favorite. I love horses so this was a dream shot for me. Hope you enjoy it. Buy a print… save a storm chaser LOL! I tell my customers the day I get struck these prints are going to be worth a lot more than you paid for them. Not that I am hoping for it.

Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Brewery lightning Thunderstorm.

This had to be one of the scariest storms I have ever chased. This chase took me from boulder county all the way to the WY border. When I landed at this spot at the brewery and set up I would hit my shutter and then jump in the back of the SUV with my feet off the ground to be protected by four rubber tires if it struck close by. Lightning bolts were striking in all directions. It was so had to tell where they were going to land. After about 20 minutes the storm headed behind plus on top of the brewery and was a little safer for shooting. 15 sec, f11, 75mm, 100 ISO.

Lightning thunderstorm 06.22.09. Chased this storm to the Ft Collins Budweiser Plant. Lightning bolt striking behind Budweiser plant. Fact: There are three main ways lightning enters homes and buildings: a direct strike, through wires or pipes that extend outside the structure and into the ground. Regardless of the method of entrance, once in a structure, the lightning can travel through the electrical, phone, plumbing, and radio or television reception systems. Lightning can also travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.

Phone use is the leading cause of indoor lightning injuries in the United States. Lightning can travel long distances in both phone and electrical wires, particularly in rural areas.
