Praying Monk with Lightning Bolt Halo

The Praying Monk” is a rock formation on the side of the famous Camelback mountain that sits in between Phoenix and Scottsdale Arizona. From the first time I saw this I was always fascinated with it and thought It would make a great spiritual shot with lightning striking. This is a shot that I worked on for three years to get. This is the real deal. I can not tell you how many times I went to my spot on the top side of this mountain and got nothing. This night was one of my most scariest nights chasing lightning. This was the first shot that got a little blown out it was an extreme bolt of energy. Nothing like being on the top of a huge rock with a metal tripod trying to get a shot for three years. This storm circled the mountains and swung around the back side and came back around to me. This was a very exciting night of chasing lightning. After this, I took off and did the chase to north Scottsdale. The Praying Monk Lightning Strike Phoenix Scottsdale Arizona

Phoenix / Scottsdale / Paradise Valley Arizona

The Praying Monk is a rock formation on the side of the famous Camelback Mountain that sits in between Phoenix and Scottsdale Arizona and I believe is officially in the township Paradise Valley.

From the first time I saw this I was always fascinated with it and thought It would make a great spiritual shot with lightning striking. This is a shot that I worked on for three years to get. This night was one of my most scariest nights as a Storm Chaser chasing lightning. Nothing like being on the top of a huge rock with a metal tripod trying to get a shot for three years. This storm circled the mountains and swung around the back side and came back around to me. This was a very exciting night of chasing lightning. After this, I took off and did the chase to north Scottsdale. This is one of the images in this series. Sepia version.

One can only image what it was like for everyone working in the brewery this night. Lightning Bolts were flying all over the place… to the left left… to the right right… watch ya step kid …watch ya step kid

Lightning Facts: A house or other substantial building offers the best protection from lightning. For a shelter to provide protection from lightning, it must contain a mechanism for conducting the electrical current from the point of contact to the ground. These mechanisms may be on the outside of the structure, may be contained within the walls of the structure, or may be a combination of the two.

On the outside, lightning can travel along the outer shell of the building or may follow metal gutters and downspouts to the ground. Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Brewery lightning Thunderstorm.

This had to be one of the scariest storms I have ever chased. This chase took me from boulder county all the way to the WY border. When I landed at this spot at the brewery and set up I would hit my shutter and then jump in the back of the SUV with my feet off the ground to be protected by four rubber tires if it struck close by. Lightning bolts were striking in all directions. It was so had to tell where they were going to land. After about 20 minutes the storm headed behind plus on top of the brewery and was a little safer for shooting. 15 sec, f11, 75mm, 100 ISO.

Lightning thunderstorm 06.22.09. Chased this storm to the Ft Collins Budweiser Plant. Lightning bolt striking behind Budweiser plant. Fact: There are three main ways lightning enters homes and buildings: a direct strike, through wires or pipes that extend outside the structure and into the ground. Regardless of the method of entrance, once in a structure, the lightning can travel through the electrical, phone, plumbing, and radio or television reception systems. Lightning can also travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.

Phone use is the leading cause of indoor lightning injuries in the United States. Lightning can travel long distances in both phone and electrical wires, particularly in rural areas.
