Praying Monk with Lightning Bolt Halo

The Praying Monk” is a rock formation on the side of the famous Camelback mountain that sits in between Phoenix and Scottsdale Arizona. From the first time I saw this I was always fascinated with it and thought It would make a great spiritual shot with lightning striking. This is a shot that I worked on for three years to get. This is the real deal. I can not tell you how many times I went to my spot on the top side of this mountain and got nothing. This night was one of my most scariest nights chasing lightning. This was the first shot that got a little blown out it was an extreme bolt of energy. Nothing like being on the top of a huge rock with a metal tripod trying to get a shot for three years. This storm circled the mountains and swung around the back side and came back around to me. This was a very exciting night of chasing lightning. After this, I took off and did the chase to north Scottsdale. A cropped version of Lightning bolts striking the Continental Divide next to the Twin Peaks, Mt. Meeker 13,911? and Longs Peak 14,256? of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Boulder County. The clouds lifted as the storm went over the mountains. It is very rare to see the Peaks during a storm as the clouds are usually low and you can not see them. This was taken at about 5,450?. Boulder County, Colorado. Colorado Summers are the best! A typical summer day is a beautiful clear morning with clouds building in the early afternoon and thunderstorms in the late afternoon. The rain comes in and cools things down. Today July 31st, 2011 at about 7:00 pm it rained in buckets. Really cooled things off. We sat out on the porch and watched the rain. It was a very verbal storm with lots of thunder and big bolts.

This was the perfect storm for me. I like to go out a half hour before sunset. Well the rain stopped and I headed out. Scanned the horizon to where it was hitting. The closest was to the North. So I headed over to McIntosh lake. Watched for a few minutes before breaking out my gear. In about 20 minutes I got these lightning photography images. Fantastic lightning Bolts. I had to back off on my view because the bolts were starting so high up in the sky. This is a view looking across the lake to North Boulder County. Next I took off to one of my favorite spots as it was hitting west on the foothills to the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. By the time In got in place it was hitting on the other side and seem to be heading west, that is very unusual. Well I did not get my dream shot and will keep on trying. Hope you like these new Lightning Images.

Lightning At Horse World a black and white color fine art print combination processing. The original was shot on film. Lightning at Horse World, Sculpture by Snell Johnson. This is the real deal. This is NOT a composite image. When I first saw this sculpture I thought it would be incredible with lightning striking. For me it is like the lightning bolts hit and the Arabian horse reared, then the Quarter horse and Thoroughbred horse took off in different directions, making this all come alive. It took me years to get this shot. It was one of the most dangerous photo shoot I have done. After years of waiting for the storms to be in the right place at the right time…. one night it happened. I was shooting in North Scottsdale Arizona and I noticed the storm down here.

So I bee lined it for this location. It was back in the day before all this area way built up. None of the houses were here. The 101 was not even started yet. I was standing in the middle of Pima road it was late so no cars. Back then people stayed home when these storms hit because of all the flash flooding and dips in the roads. So here I am shooting in the middle of the road with a medal tripod. The lightning strikes were extremely close. This was shot with a 50mm lens. About a 45 sec exposure. Water was running at my feet getting me wet. In the middle of the road with water at my feet and a medal tripod and lightning hitting feet away. But this is the Shot… this is the shot I have been waiting for for years. And it is happening. So I grin and bear it and hope of for the best. I can say my heart was racing. Did not even know if I would get the shot or get killed. Well I got the shot. One on color and one in Black and white. This is my favorite. I love horses so this was a dream shot for me. Hope you enjoy it. Buy a print… save a storm chaser LOL! I tell my customers the day I get struck these prints are going to be worth a lot more than you paid for them. Not that I am hoping for it.
