Lightning at Horseworld.

This project took two years to get this lightning photography image with the bronze horses. The first time I saw this incredible horse sculpture by Snell Johnson in front of… back then called “Horseman’s Park” in North Scottsdale Arizona, I envisioned it with lightning hitting behind it. This to me would make it come alive.

The thunder cracks and the lightning hits, making the Arabian horse rear and the Quarter horse and Thoroughbred dart off in different directions. For two years I waited for this to happen. This is the real deal no photoshop magic here, back then I didn’t even have photoshop. Only a good old darkroom. The originals were shot on film.

On this night I was out making the rounds and saw that a storm was heading in that direction. It was very late at night about 1:00 am. The photo set up was in the middle of Pima Road, there were no cars around. This was years before the 101 was even built. Using a 50mm lens I shot this incredible lightning photo image in black and white as well as color.

This was a very very uncomfortable and dangerous photo shoot. Lightning was hitting paces away. I’m in the middle of the road with a medal tripod and a stream of water is beginning to run at my feet getting me wet and also making me a conductor. Working fast to say the least I got the shot and go the HELL out of dodge. For me, it has always been about making lightning images a little different and as art. It is my hope that you see that in the lightning images.
