Arizona, in North Scottsdale is Pinnacle Peak, my old stomping grounds.
This is one incredibly beautiful area with lots of saguaro cactus and big boulders. I would say this is the most beautiful desert in the USA. It’s just to bad that it is now all large houses and what we call golf land. Back in the day this was not even North Scottsdale it was just way out in the desert, the boonies. Jerry Nelson bought most of this land and developed it. People thought he was crazy back then… until he hit a water well. But, we still have Greasewood Flats, an old bunk house that Doc made into a bar for him, his wife and friends to drink at. It has turn in to one of the best watering holes in Arizona.
Funny years ago it was only Reata Pass Steak House, The Cook Shack ( Gone for years now. Had the best burgers and pie. They used to give you a lantern to take to your picnic table in the middle of the desert.) and Greasewood. Now it is surrounded by Troon Golf Club, The Famous Four Seasons Hotel, Desert Highlands Golf Club and million dollar homes. I feel lucky to have spent time here before all the madness of growth, we would go and have snow ball fights at Greasewood when it snowed once in a blue moon and use the cover wagons to hide behind. Then sometimes go to the water tower after hours with take-out beer from Greasewood and hang out by a fire to the wee hours of the night playing guitar and singing old songs.
This is a black and white photograph of Pinnacle Peak the Mountain surrounded by lightning bolts. Lightning striking on both sides and above during a monsoon thunderstorm. Cloud to ground lightning as well as cloud to cloud. This is a 25 sec exposure, one strike. This was shot on film back when I used to shoot with bulb counting and let go after something big happened. I have seen some of the most amazing lightning strikes up here. And also have had some of the most scary moments when all the hair on your body stands up. This area is higher in elevation than the low desert floor of the valley. The peak has en elevation of about 3100 feet or 945 meters. Back in the day this was not even North Scottsdale it was its own area just way out in the desert, the boonies. It got annexed years ago to Scottsdale.
